Entering the Political Arena? Here’s What You Should Know

In the past few years, young women have increasingly taken an interest in politics. However, they lack the knowledge of where and when to start. 

Women’s roles in politics in the United States have developed dramatically throughout time. From the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to the present, the political involvement of women has been defined by determination and commitment. 

Due to the ongoing inequality towards women in and before the 19th century, a suffrage movement, led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, resulted in the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. This historic milestone laid a foundation for female involvement in politics. 

Since then, young women have increasingly taken up political positions. As a result, there has been a significant increase in female representation in various legislative bodies and government positions. 

Despite improvements, young women continue to confront challenges such as preconceptions, sexism, and unequal opportunity. 

Because of this, I’ve come up with a list of advice for young women entering their path in politics:

• • Develop an in-depth understanding of the topics that are important to you and those around you.  Investigate, analyze, and remain current on local and worldwide issues. Always know what you’re saying and never speak without thinking. It is critical to be logical and practical in politics.

• • Don’t be scared to express your opinion on crucial matters. Use your position and voice to advocate for change and to inspire others. As an immigrant and first-generation student, this is a significant aspect of my life and the reason I am interested in politics. My ability to relate to and advocate for others offers me a voice in my school and community.

• • Participate/ start off with organizations and clubs like Women in Politics, Young Democrats/ Republicans, etc. Start small and make sure to build up a platform and get as much experience as needed.

• • Always, always, always! Stay true to yourself! No matter what and who says otherwise- your voice and ideas matter; don’t take yourself for granted. 

Women’s roles in American politics are a story of development, persistence, and the never-ending search for equality. Women have consistently proved their ability to lead, advocate, and design policies that resonate with the needs of diverse populations, from historic freedom movements to modern efforts for representation.
